About Us

Building Stone is a premier natural stone production and masonry company headquartered in Oxfordshire. We have been producing high-quality stone and masonry products for over a quarter of a century. Building Stone is the processing and stone masonry arm of the highly-regarded Johnston Quarry Group, run by experienced and highly skilled design and processing teams.

With stone processing sites set in the heart of the Cotswolds and Oxfordshire, along with our head office at Great Tew, Building Stone in its multiple forms have been producing beautiful natural stone for over 300 years.

History

Stanleys quarry was first used during the 1600’s when Bed 2 was extracted. This golden yellow Cotswold stone was used mainly within the local area, the delightful village of Chipping Campden being the best example. The stone was also exported as far afield as the Windrush Valley where it was used as masonry detailing to contrast beautifully with the lighter stones of that region.

Nowadays

In 2020 Stanleys Quarry was acquired by the Johnston Quarry Group to complement its sister operation at Hornton Grounds. With a highly skilled team, we are able to deal expertly and efficiently with clients whose needs vary from multi-build housing developments, commercial offices through to replacement of one particular precise dressed stone during specialist restoration projects.

With significant and ongoing investment in our machinery and production processes, including new automatic sawing, five axis profiling and milling, as well as a new tumbling line, we have increased production and supply to meet greater demand from both new and loyal customers. The addition of a new Fantini JCB Chainsaw brings additional benefits, supplying sawn two sides limestone block into the processing works to assist with production and help minimise the transport of waste minerals between our sites.

Our locations

We have two processing plants in the heart of England. In Oxfordshire our state-of-the-art Ironstone works is based at Hornton Grounds, where we process Great Tew Ironstone with its distinctive deep orange-brown colour interspersed with white marbling.

At Stanleys, our unique limestone processing operation based in the beautiful surroundings of the Cotswolds, overlooking the market towns of Chipping Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh, produces stone which is subsequently used throughout the country.
